Low material modular artificial islands
More and more artificial islands are being erected all over the world, especially in Dubai and in Japan. Lack of land near coastal populated areas, and the yearning of people to coasts and water motivate them to buy real estate properties nearby the water and on artificial islands. Land reclamation is another important branch of building the sea.
The conventional way to build an artificial island is to fill an expansive protection sea-wall (kind of a breakwater) with dredged sea-sand. The problem starts when sea sand is scarce, or was exhausted, like for example in Singapore, Dubai and other countries. Sand filled island are vulnerable to earthquakes, due to a phenomena called liquefaction. Moreover, it is uneconomical to built small islands due to relative high price of the sea-walls (the smaller the island relatively bigger is its circumference, and the useful area is very costly). Surrounding many small islands with a breakwater (see "The World" in Dubai, is protected by 25 Km breakwater!) is very costly, and there is also a risk of fouling water. Environmentalists are warming that blocking the sea with sand might harm the sea nature.
OBS IsleLand is modular and hollow; the OceanBricks enable every form and size of Island. The structure is fabricated on-shore and will be towed floating to its final destination where it will be sink to rest firmly on the seabed. The structure is perforated and will allow the water, currents and waves to flow below. The structure is earthquake resist, and liquefaction free. The island requires 7% only off the sand required by the conventional fill-in system. The OBS islands do not require sea sand (The small amount needed is terrestrial sand). Everyone how built an OBS IsleLand is concurrently building a habitat and an artificial reef, and is protecting the endangered marine environment. The versatility of the OBS system allows almost any change and expansion at any time. Most important, OBS IsleLands are making redundant any kind of breakwater or protecting walls.
OBS IsleLands are the future technology for building the sea! Moreover, every OBS IsleLand being an artificial reef is demonstrating the co-existence of mankind and the oceans' inhabitants.
